![]() ❧ First Impressions VISUAL: Fray looks mostly human. She stands at 175cm (or about 5'7"), with a thin and lanky frame. Her hair is a dirty blonde colour, with streaks of red dyed into them. Her eyes are dark red, and they are very reflective - similar to that of cats' eyes. When channeling her void form, her scleras turn pitch black. As she is a demi-human (and has fused with void horrors), she has a partly monstrous appearance. Large swathes of her skin are black, with a rubber-like quality. Because of this, she always wears full-body clothing, as well as gloves. She has... almost no chest, due to the transformation process. Her right hand is still flesh-coloured, so she is allowed to leave it bare some of the time. Usually, her hair reaches to halfway down her back. However, when she begins tapping into her powers, they will become much longer. There are two rows of 'plugs' installed into the nape of her neck as interfaces for the void ships that she pilots. They appear as dots on her skin the size of a dime. Her PB is Hori from Horimiya. FASHION: She is almost always in her Freight pilot's uniform - a full-body suit made of a substance similar to a rubber wetsuit. The uniform is black with purple highlights, as well as her callsign (K-42) printed over the chest area. The suit covers her hands and feet, leaving only a single opening for her neck. If she has to wear something else, she would almost always pick clothing with long sleeves, as well as gloves and a hood/cloak. She has a strong perception of the need to keep her monstrous nature hidden, so it is difficult to convince her otherwise. Her favourite colours are (predictably) red, a soft green, and bright technicolour blue. These are the stripe colours of her friends. DEMEANOUR: Fray is cheerful, despite the nature of her existence. She bounces on her heels and finds it hard to stay still except when in the pilot's seat. She lets her emotions show without restraint, and tends to hum to herself when left alone. SOUND: Her voice is bright, however sometimes it takes on a slightly distorted quality similar to radio static. SCENT: If she has been driving, she would probably smell of a very strong impression of mint. Otherwise, she tries her best to keep herself clean (and free of smells). MENTAL INFORMATION: Fray's mental presence is a stark contrast to her (mostly) human appearance. Her thoughts are often scrambled by her void infection, and becomes incomprehensible to others - existing as a chaotic cloud in a person's psychic view. As a result, she is somewhat protected from mental manipulation. It is very difficult to brainwash her, as the void's influence easily 'backflows' to the would-be controller and may fry their brain instead. MAGICAL INFORMATION: Being a demi-human means her presence practically screams 'creature of the void' to adequately sensitive people. However, while she is chaotic, she is not inherently evil or malicious. ❧ OOC BACKTAGGING: Hell yeah. I backtag into eternity. FOURTHWALLING: I'll pass on this one. PHYSICAL AFFECTION: Go ahead, but IC response may not be positive. PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: Same as above. Small tussling is fine but I'd like any permanent injuries to be discussed first. ❧ Opt-Out Fray's backstory deals with Lovecraftian horrors, human experimentation, and some touches of implied slavery/abuse. If you aren't comfortable with these, please let me know! No questions asked. |

In the distant future, humanity contracted with the Elder Gods to allow them passage through the Void. As the Void exists on the reverse side of the physical world, taking a shortcut through the Void allowed for circumventing the lightspeed limit of interstellar travel. Because of this pact, humans were able to expand across the galaxy. Much of the movement of people and goods rely on Void travel, so the industry is very tightly regulated. One can almost say that the corporation controlling Void ships have the most authority in the human-settled realms.
DEMI-HUMANS:
Only a denizen of the Void can navigate it safely without being driven mad. Pure human pilots cannot guide their ships without permanent damage to their sanity; thus a new class of sentient beings were created. Demi-humans are fusions of void monsters within a human vessel, and receive the ability to conceptualize and understand the nether realms.
Once a person is inoculated with the void taint, they will begin to transform. The exact manifestation varies from person to person, and usually reflects the state of their psyche. Tentacular growths are common, but not the absolute norm. Subjects are either sold into the Void shipping trade by their legal guardians, or sign a contract to give up their humanity in exchange for board and room.
Demi-humans are feared by pure-blooded humans as necessary abominations. While they perform the vital task of navigation, they are not given full rights and often are treated as property. A strong aversion to disobedience and showing 'improper' (monstrous) behaviour is instilled into the pilots, making them loyal workers. They live in separate enclaves from humans and self-modified neo-humans, often in the vicinity of a Void port docked into orbit. Life breathing planetary air and seeing blue skies are considered impossible dreams.
The 'terminal' existence of a demi-human is the sublimation of their humanity. Their physical shells crumble to dust and their soul returns to the Void to rejoin the Elder Gods. This may be an important motivation in their agreement to the contract, but the intentions of the Gods still remain impossible to comprehend.
VOID SHIPS:
The true test of whether a person can survive the transformation is if they can pilot a ship safely to their destination. Due to strict training, accidents are rare, and the pilots take pride in their speedy delivery rates. It's
brainwashed into thema company edict, though older pilots learn to question it when appropriate.Low-skilled pilots drive freight ships, as these are cheaper to replace. Only the most skilled of pilots are allowed to navigate for passenger ships - they are either experienced, or have almost completely accepted the void into their souls (and are thus close to death).
The ships themselves are organic structures grown using techniques passed down by the Elder Gods. They are built similar to real life boats with evidently living walls. A pilot has to neurally link themselves to the ship to begin driving it. For larger ships, the pilot is immersed in a fluid tank; while smaller ships just require a plug inserted into their spinal cord.
Flying a freight ship is an extremely lonely affair, as there is usually only a single pilot. Taking on trans-galactic deliveries solo and surviving the horrifying madness is considered a badge of honour.
❧ Character Information
HISTORY:
Fray was born in the slums of a colony on Titan. Picked up by the Void travel company at sixteen, she was brought to the pilot programme and underwent the inoculation regime. She survived the madness despite her young age, and began operating out of the Titan orbital base as a rookie pilot with the tag Freighter K-42. She has forgotten her birth name and thus uses a shorthand version of her tag as her 'mundane' name.
She was mentored by a couple of pilots higher up in the experience ladder, as is common in an environment similar to a prison camp. Due to the 'international' nature of ports, she has heard many stories of worlds outside of Saturn and of Earth (which is supposed to be a paradise). She has a strong sense of curiosity for the outside world and things that she cannot experience. Traveling through the Void also shows pilots visions of other realms, so she knows of different worlds and that she won't be able to visit them.
Her favourite food is ice cream, a luxury in orbital settlements.
ABILITIES:
As a demi-human, Fray has higher endurance and regeneration capabilities than normal.
She is also able to sense 'seams' in the fabric that separates the physical world from the Void. This 'Void Sight' is inherent to all pilots and is crucial to easing a ship between dimensions. Using her hands (or a piercer built into a transport ship), she can tear them open and create a gate to the Void. Small gaps close quickly, so she needs a stabilizer to keep it open.
The company trains its pilots to stay as human as they can, so Fray's form can usually pass for one. However, her appearance will shift when she is tapping into her Void-given powers. Her hair becomes an assembly of prehensile tendrils, allowing her to use them as extra hands. Eyes will open on the blackened parts of her body, with red scleras and white pupils. Her human eyes will have black scleras instead.
Demi-humans have the innate ability to spew mist and spread the taint to others, however they are unaware of this fact and thus do not know how to utilize it. Trained pilots can use their experience to 'overpower' an ordinary transport vessel and turn it into one capable of traversing the Void, however this comes at a high cost to their sanity. Their blood is a bright, artificial red and is lethally toxic to pure-blood humans.
Other than her navigation training, Fray is mostly illiterate and will probably not survive outside of her work.
